Can sex sell the environment? Well, sexy celebrities can certainly help to get the message to the masses. The Environmental Media Association (EMA), in conjunction with Lionsgate Films, are running a campaign to get people to stop throwing their cellphones in the trash. We caught up with Greg Baldwin, Director of the EMA, to ask him about cellphones and celebrity spokespeople.

Why cellphone recycling?

Consumers replace their cell phones at an ever-increasing rate to keep up with the latest technology, but many people don’t know what to do with their old phones. The Environmental Media Association wants to get out the message that you can’t throw away your old phones because they include toxic materials. We are providing an easy way to recycle your cell phones for free at answer-the-call. net

What do you hope to accomplish?

We hope to educate consumers on the need to recycle their phones, provide an easy way to do it and raise money for environmental causes.

How do celebrities help get the message across?

Celebrities amplify the message and get people talking about the campaign. Eva Mendes and Scarlett Johansson’s participation meant that so many more people will see the campaign and learn about cell phone recycling.

Was it easy to get the celebrities involved?

EMA worked with Lionsgate to make this campaign a reality by partnering with their holiday release, “The Spirit.” They have been amazing partners and all the talent has been incredibly supportive of the project.

What not encourage people not to use cellphones?

Reducing cell phone consumption will be more difficult as it will mean a major shift in consumer habits by educating them on the need to keep their cell phones for a longer period of time. That may be the road we go down in the future, but right now, we think it is more effective to make sure consumers recycle their phones safely and utilize the money raised for environmental causes.
